Improving nutrition a major priority for LIFT

Yangon, 3 May 2011 – There is an increased concern that food security and livelihoods programmes need to be linked to improving nutrition. Most South and East Asian countries still encounter problems of under-nutrition, of which the most common are protein-energy malnutrition and vitamin A, iron and iodine deficiencies.

In Myanmar, the major nutritional problems are underweight (31.8%) and stunting in children under five years. (MOH and UNICEF), and over 70% nationally of iron-deficiency anaemia in women and children under five years (DOH).

LIFT joins Myanmar business leaders at Global Compact meeting

1 May 2012 -- Over 200 representatives from Myanmar and international private sector companies, UN, diplomatic corps and NGOs gathered for the UN Global Compact meeting in Yangon today. The large turnout for this meeting demonstrated growing interest in corporate social responsibility in Myanmar recently highlighted as "the next economic frontier in Asia" by IMF.

Speaking at the launch, which brought together a number of domestic and international companies in Myanmar, the United Nations Secretary- General Ban Ki-moon said that it was a “remarkable” time for the country as it has great potential for expansion in business and investment. “Equally paramount is development that is widespread and sustainable,” he stated, adding that, to deliver prosperity and opportunity widely, Myanmar needs strong and inclusive markets.

New Zealand aid supports poor households in the rural Myanmar

29 March 2012, Pyapon - First Secretary Mr. Philip Hewitt from the New Zealand Embassy in Bangkok visited Ngutaw and Kan Seik villages of Cyclone Nargis affected Pyapon Township to inspect LIFT’s partner PACT Myanmar’s microfinance project.

“The enthusiasm from the potential borrowers at the microfinance training showed that the LIFT project is helping to meet a demand for capital at the village level. Microfinance borrowers are using loans to increase their incomes and to better support their families,” said Hewitt. Read more>>

Livelihoods and Food Security Trust Fund (LIFT) showcased its work at the International Women’s Day high level forum at NPT opened by HE Dr Sai Mauk Kham, Vice-President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar. Since 2010, LIFT’s partners in Myanmar have assisted more than half million poor women living in rural areas.

Livelihoods and Food Security Trust Fund (LIFT)

LIFT is a multi-donor trust fund. It was established to improve the livelihoods and food security of the poorest and most vulnerable people in Myanmar. The havoc wreaked by the cyclone on Myanmar’s Ayeyarwady Delta region provided the Fund with a clear initial focus for its activities. LIFT has already backed efforts to rebuild the livelihoods of more than 150,000 households in the affected areas. Assistance provided through the LIFT Fund will follow a community development approach and target the poorest households irrespective of gender, race, religion, creed or sexual orientation.

Innovation and Learning funding window

The LIFT donor consortium and the LIFT fund board have agreed to establish a new LIFT funding envelope called the innovation and learning window. The funding window will make resources available separately from formal funding rounds. Applications can be received on an ongoing basis.
